Week of September 2 - September 8, 2024
Prayer/Pledge/Devotional
The Core Knowledge Sequence is a free printable resource that outlines what children should be learning in each grade. The expectations seem more rigorous, but also more age-appropriate than the state standards. Check them out, and watch my TPT store for resources to aid you in teaching these standards.
The Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence Skills Worked On This Week:
*Monday was Labor Day, so we had a four-day school week.
I-VA1.4a Demonstrate memory of visual details by identifying what is different after a collection of objects is examined, removed from sight, altered and reintroduced.
Using a small wooden tray, I placed 3-4 items on a tray and let the kids look at the tray for about 20 seconds. Then I asked them to close their eyes while I either added or removed an object. When they opened their eyes again they tried to determine what had changed.
II-VA3.1 Look at and talk about works of art, describing details and “story” depicted, such as objects, people, activities, setting, time day/year, long ago/ contemporary, etc. as well as the mood/feeling elicited.
We looked at art in some of our art books for this lesson.
II-VA3.2 Describe one’s own artwork, explaining the materials and techniques used.
I asked the kids questions about their artworks as we crafted.
II-VA2.19 Examine a work of art by a known artist and create a work “in the style of…” (Rhythm by Delaunay; Blue Hippo; Head of a Man by Klee; The Snail by Matisse; People and Dog in Sun by Miro; Broadway Boogie Woogie by Mondrain).
This week, we spent time looking at the pictures mentioned above. Next week, we will work on doing an “in the style of…” piece of art.
Science:
Nature Observations: These are any observations we see in our day-to-day activities. We observe the weather and discuss other things that catch the kids’ eyes throughout the day.
Science Activity: We’ve been noticing signs of Fall this week. The kids wondered why the leaves change colors, so we learned a little about that.
Math:
Numbers: We are working on learning numbers 0-20. (rote counting).
Language Arts:
Letter of the Week: This week’s letter is Y. Y has four main sounds: Y as in yarn, Y as in butterfly, Y as in crystal, and Y as in candy.
Letter Art— I created bubble letters that I printed on cardstock so the kids could glue on items that go with the letter this week. For Y, they used yarn, a crystal, butterfly stickers, and candy wrappers.
Reading: We always read at least two books, but I’ll read for as long as they want or for as much time as we can. For some books, I’ll just read (interactive reading) while for others, I will ask questions as we go (dialogic reading) or point out our sound of the week. I try to do a mix of reading for fun and reading for learning during this time. You can click the link at the top of the page to view our reading log for some great book suggestions.
Poems/Nursery Rhymes/Classics: We are bouncing back and forth between poems and nursery rhymes from several books. (Nursery Rhymes, poems, classic stories, and songs teach a whole slew of skills. Here is an excellent article that provides a broad idea of the educational impact these can have.)
Music:
Songs: For the rest of the summer I’ve stopped intentionally teaching new songs unless one pops into my head. During work and play we sing the nursery rhymes and songs we’ve already learned. (Nursery Rhymes, poems, and songs teach a whole slew of skills. Here is an excellent article that provides a broad idea of the educational impact these can have.)
